Frequently Asked Questions
- Can you put songs from this or that soundtrack on the station?
The way the station works is that people from vgmusic.com submit works(/midis) they've made to be uploaded to the station. Unless
people send me stuff they've done from the specific soundtrack you want, I have nothing to put up.
- Well, can't you just make MP3's of other people's stuff yourself?
Sorry, no. The other way this station works is that you get to hear tracks the way the original sequencer intended for them to be
heard, the way their songs sound on their synths. That means they're the ones to do the encoding, not anyone else.
- Do you only accept music directly from video games?
We accept other things too. Fangame music, or music you created for an original game, may be submitted. Also, originals of your own
that have nothing to do with games can be submitted... as long as you're a vgmusic.com sequencer, anything goes. You must be the actual
sequencer of the file you're submitting though. Do keep in mind, however, that the site focuses more on actual video game music than
anything else, so we try to keep the ratio of originals to normal stuff rather low.
- Can I submit music to the station?
Yes, but only if you meet a few requirements. You must be a person that regularly submits sequences to
vgmusic.com. The tune you submit must also be good quality too.
- You mean I can't submit if I'm not a regular submitter at vgmusic.com? =/
We make exceptions. If you know what you're doing, and the first thing you submit is a video game piece (and you submit vg pieces
every so often in your pile of submissions, not all originals please), then we'll likely throw you on the "whitelist" and just accept
everything you send from then on. There are quite a few songs from two Overclocked Remixers
already up here.
- Are there songs that you don't accept?
Yes. In order to prevent Sony, one of the big dogs in the RIAA, from coming down on us like a ton of bricks, neither this station nor
any of the ones on Zone Radio Network will play songs copyrighted by Sony Computer Entertainment. You can find a list of the games
published by them here. Please note: this does not include
songs in games published by SCEA but developed by Square-Enix, such as Final Fantasy VII or Tactics. Square-Enix fully owns their
music, not SCEA, and we can safely get away with playing them.
- So how do I go about submitting then?
The submission process is as follows:
- Record an MP3 of your midi.
- E-mail the MP3 to me. (
)
- That's pretty much it.
- You don't have a problem with me not letting you know I have a submission ready before sending it?
Only if you're about to send me 200mb worth of music. Anything over 40mb, send in 20mb chunks please, to give me enough time to
pull the MP3's off the e-mail server's inbox before getting overwhelmed. I'll let you know when I receive each batch so you can send
the next.
- Are there any requirements as to how to format the MP3?
Requirements are as follows:
- I need MP3 files preferably, but as my converters can work with other file formats, such as OGG, you can submit anything, so
long as it's an actual recorded audio file. Do not send me your barebones midi.
- High quality is recommended. I appreciate people wanting to help out, but very few people have the technology needed to encode
their songs the necessary way for the FM station. 128kbps 44khz at least.
- No songs under 45 seconds.
- Don't go overboard with looping. Try to keep the song under 3 or 4 minutes if it's a short song that you're looping. People don't
want to listen to the same song over again 5 times for 10 minutes.
- I'll try to change the volume level for all incoming songs as I go, but if you feel the need to do so before you send it, make sure
your MP3 is normalized with a max volume no higher than 89db.
- Can you increase the bitrate of the station?
We offer two stations at different bitrates for people with differing connections. The AM station is 16kbps 11khz, and the FM station
is 32kbps 22khz without the plugin and 64kbps 44khz with. That's the best we can offer, but that certainly isn't bad.
- Why can't I connect?
The maximum number of listners that can connect at any one time is 20. Increase in the future may be possible, but
not probable.
- How often do those advertisements play?
On average, one every 30 minutes.
- Why is the station down?
One of two reasons. Either Zone Radio Network itself is down or going through maintenance, or someone is in the process of starting
or finishing a live broadcast; the station may go down before or after live broadcasts depending on how fast they start it after we set
it up, or how long it takes us to reset the station after they finish. Either way, if it stays down for more than 10 minutes, let
either me ( ) or Andy ( ) know so we can check into it ASAP.
- I'm having problems with that FM plugin.
The most common problems are .pls links not working and song info not streaming. Both are problems with the plugin itself and aren't
fixable until a new version of the plugin is released. Actually, the .pls file problem can be fixed by running the plugin in
Winamp 2 instead of Winamp 5.
